Product Overview

This is a simple, versatile, and powerful motor driver for almost any of your robotics projects. The board is based around the DRV8251 H-Bridge motor driver, allowing for a 3.7A peak current (~2.3A continuous) and 4.5V-48V supply voltage range. This driver can be used for almost any brushed DC motor because of its wide voltage range and current capabilities.

Use the driver starting by screwing your two motor terminal wires into OUT1 and OUT2, and your power supply wires to VCC and GND. Then use female ended jumper wires to connect 2 microcontroller pins to IN1 and IN2 and your controller’s GND to GND. Finally, connect your logic level voltage to VREF. You can use PWM signals on both IN1 and IN2 for motor speed control, or just a high/low logic voltage. Note that either terminal of a brushed DC motor can be connected to OUT1 or OUT2, and reversing them will only change the motor direction. You can also control two motors unidirectionally by connecting one of their terminals to GND, and the other to one of the OUT connectors.

The VREF pin is required to enable the current limit. At 5V on the VREF pin, the current limit will be ~2.3A, and at 3.3V the current limit will be ~1.5A. You can calculate the current limit by dividing the voltage by 2.2. If you don’t want a current limit, then use solder to bridge across the two pads near the “R220” shunt resistor (see more in the product tutorial). If this is done you will still need to provide a logic voltage on the VREF pin.

This motor driver can be controlled with 1.8V, 3.3V and 5V logic (1.5V-5.5V). The DRV8251 has built in overcurrent protection, thermal shutdown, and undervoltage lockout to protect itself and the motor. Two M3 mounting holes make incorporating this board into your project much easier, as well as using the screw terminals and 2.54mm (0.1″) pitch male header pins.
